Defying The Odds South Africa with George Butau

Among the many other reasons for starting this project in the township of Khayelitsha, Khayelitsha is the biggest black township in Capetown, South Africa. It is a marginalized township which also is a crime ridden area. Crimes include theft, robberies, burglaries, murders.

It has also high levels of drug, substance and alcohol abuse which includes the youth, high levels of teenage pregnancies, high levels of school dropouts and poor pass rates in the schools.

It is against such a disturbing background that I decided to start this project and use chess as a tool to keep the kids off the streets and help them to develop better mindsets, abstain from drugs, alcohol and substance abuse, stay away from committing crime actsas there are vulnerable and easily coerced into doing all these bad things (Next page).
